Ivy Siu is not the sort of person to do anything in half measures. So it’s not surprising that when she heard Ricky’s All Day Grill was looking for new franchisees in Red Deer, Alberta, she jumped into her car and drove to one of their existing locations to check it out.

When Siu reached the restaurant, she was so taken with the Ricky’s All Day Grill concept that she leapt at the chance to join the franchise chain. “It was an immediate decision right then and there,” says Siu, now the owner and operator of two Ricky’s franchises in Red Deer, together with her husband Stephen Siu and brother Michael Tong.

Fifteen years later, Siu still embraces each day with the same gusto and ‘get up and go’ attitude that pushed her to buy a Ricky’s franchise in the first place.

It’s this energy and drive that have helped Siu expand the family business over the years. In addition to the two Ricky’s All Day Grill locations already in operation, plans are underway to open a Ricky’s Café concept, also in Red Deer. And last year, the family bought a Fatburger franchise – a hamburger brand owned by the same franchisor as Ricky’s.

With three successful franchise operations already in place and a third on its way, it’s not surprising to learn that Siu is a big fan of the franchise concept. She credits the support and framework it provides for being able to grow her business into a multi-franchise operation. “We believe in the franchise system and we believe in the franchise model,” explains Siu. “We get the support that we need. I don’t feel my business would have grown to multiple operations if it weren’t a franchise. I wouldn’t have had the time to open new restaurants. Franchising gives you those advantages.”

While Siu readily admits that running a restaurant can be tough, she stresses that the payback is tremendous. Not only can a Ricky’s franchisee achieve business success, but they will have the pleasure of working in a stimulating environment that delivers something new and fresh, week in and week out.

“If you have the right mentality for this business, then you will enjoy the work every day, because every day will be different,” says Siu. “There is not a single day in my working life here that has been the same. Every day is a new day.”
