Today’s program will focus on providing you and your franchise system with practical business solutions to today’s franchise industry legal issues.

The issues you face are growing in complexity, cost and consequence. We have assembled a group of experts who are among Canada’s leading franchise lawyers to lead our discussions at the plenary sessions, workshops and roundtables. Our program focuses not just on the most recent legal developments this past year, but on some of the most practical business solutions implemented by our experts in franchising.

We will begin this year’s program with our Breakfast Bar Plenary: The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017 (Bill 148): What’s Next for Franchisors? This session will focus on what’s next for joint employer risk in the franchise industry and proposed amendments to employment and labour laws that will increase the risk of unionization for franchise systems. Our own expert in employment and labour law, Matthew Badrov from Sherrard Kuzz LLP, will explore new strategies and business focused solutions to mitigate the risks arising out of these far reaching changes to the employment and labour law landscape impacting the franchise industry.

Today’s Concurrent Workshops have been designed to be of interest to business representatives, in house counsel and external franchise lawyers. We have developed workshops to focus on practical business issues, including best practices for preparing earnings projections and estimates of operating costs, managing defaults, terminations and the duty of good faith, negotiating franchise agreements and tips for the efficient administration of disclosure documents. You will also be able to participate in roundtable discussions where you will learn and exchange ideas in a smaller forum with other attendees.

Our program will conclude with the return of our Legal and Legislative Update Plenary led this year by Darrell Jarvis and Jonathan Mesiano-Crookston. These practitioners will wrap up our day with a fast paced review of the latest developments in franchise legislation and the increasing body of franchise case law. This session will focus on lessons learned from issues impacting many of you operating in the franchising industry across the country.

Thank you for joining us and we hope you enjoy the day!
