Mentor: Wayne Maillet, President, Franchise Specialists
Q: Why did you volunteer as a mentor? A: Over 25 years in franchising, I have noticed that franchisors often go through trial and error to end up learning the hard way, often making the same mistakes. This does not have to be the case. The mentorship program can assist franchisors in avoiding the costly mistakes by becoming familiar with franchising best practices.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your mentorship to date?
A: Making a difference in Kim’s thought process. There have been great conversations where we explore all the options. There is usually more than one answer to a particular issue. By exploring in detail all the possibilities, I believe better decisions have been made. For me, it has brought fresh ideas that I would not have thought of on my own.
Q: Would you recommend this program to other CFA members?
A: Yes. It’s rewarding for both the mentor and the mentee. It certainly allows new franchisors to capitalize on years of experience. By focusing on franchising best practices, franchisors can avoid costly mistakes and experience profitability sooner. For the mentor, it allows you to share and help others and feel good about contributing to the success of franchising in Canada.

Q: Why did you apply for the program?
A: As a new franchisor I found myself spinning with certain aspects of my business due to the fact I had not had any franchise experience in my lifetime. My background was of an RCMP officer for 19 years and while that career assisted me in many aspects, it left me scratching my head at more of the complex questions. This has given me a chance to bounce ideas off my mentor. He has certainly saved me thousands of dollars, time and ultimately stress.
Q: How has your mentorship evolved to meet your needs and questions?
A: I can speak freely to my mentor without concern of judgement. He has listened to all my ideas and concerns and has addressed each one separately. I have learned more in the past three months about franchising than I ever thought possible.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have received from your mentor to date?
A: If any of my decisions do not benefit franchise development, don’t do it.
“[My mentor] has certainly saved me thousands of dollars, time and ultimately stress.”
