We are looking for qualified speakers to address current issues and share best practices for the 2017 CFA Franchise Law Day to be held on September 26, 2017 at the Old Mill in Toronto. In 2017, the Co-Chairs for this highly popular event will be Michael Sherrard, Partner at Sherrard Kuzz LLP, and Christine Jackson, Senior Associate at Osler Hoskin & Harcourt LLP.

The theme for this year’s Law Day is “Putting Business in the Driver’s Seat: The Road to Business Practical Solutions to Legal Issues” and the chairs are looking to put together a program that provides practical solutions to current legal issues, aimed primarily at franchisors and their in-house legal teams. The Law Day will work to look outside of the traditional legal franchise topics and into issues that affect franchisors on a day-to-day basis.

Suggested topics for this year’s concurrent and roundtable sessions include:

  • Getting out of the weeds: Tips for the efficient administration of disclosure documents, including customization
  • Selling franchises: How to prepare and disclose an earnings projection
  • Moving past perfect: System changes, good faith and how to get comfortable with some level of risk
  • Come together: How to effectively establish and utilize a franchisee advisory council
  • Going digital: Using electronic documents, contracts and e-signatures for disclosure and contract administration
  • Data breaches: Best practices for avoiding one and what to do if one occurs

We invite CFA member lawyers and in-house counsel to submit a speaking proposal for concurrent or roundtable topics, which take a best practice approach to provide the greatest practical information for franchise system attendees. We very much encourage you to circulate this request within your businesses, firms and organizations.
