Carl’s Jr. Set for Canadian Expansion
With its first Canadian location in Kelowna, British Columbia up and running, Carl’s Jr. plans to open up to 450 additional locations across Canada, 250 of which are expected to open within the next 10 years.
“We’re very active now in our entry plans,” says Ned Lyerly, a spokesman for Carl’s Jr. “It’s a green light for us all the way and we think we’re doing quite well.”
The Kelowna restaurant is owned by John Dowling, who plans to open four more locations in the Okanagan Valley. Carl’s Jr. is looking for franchise developers like Dowling who can open five to 25 locations. Another franchisee has been signed for the Greater Vancouver Area, where the company plans to add 25 locations, and negotiations are underway for entry into the Toronto market.
To support its expansion plans and build brand awareness, Carl’s Jr. has partnered with Network Franchising International, a franchise sales and marketing company.
“It’s a very competitive sector as a whole,” says Lyerly of the quick-service restaurant industry. “There are entrenched competitors but we think our brand competes with all those concepts. We think Canada is a fabulous quick-service restaurant and burger market.”

Van Houtte® Selects Brand Ambassadors
Van Houtte® has chosen brand ambassadors to represent the company and build brand awareness in four target provinces – Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec.
“Depending on their field of expertise, the role of each ambassador will be to personalize the brand and enhance the coffee experience of consumers in their specific regions,” says Marie-Claude Dessureault, Director, Coffee Expertise. “Van Houtte® is well established and recognized in Quebec, and we believe that reinforcing our brand in other regions of Canada, where we have consolidated our distribution network, will help bolster widespread appreciation of the quality of our gourmet products.”
Award-winning author and food critic James Chatto has been named brand ambassador for Ontario; writer, culture enthusiast and public relations professional Kelly Doody for Alberta; pastry chef and chocolatier Wendy Boys for British Columbia; and renowned chef and restaurant owner Marc-Andre Royal for Quebec. Each ambassador will represent the Van Houtte® brand in their province, participate in brand-related events and contribute content to the company’s Facebook page and blog.
“By acting as personalities for the Van Houtte® brand, our ambassadors can share their expertise and passion for coffee based on their respective vision and profession,” says Isabelle Pasquet-Geairon, Vice President of Marketing for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), which owns Van Houtte®. “This will give consumers yet another way to get more out of their coffee culture.”
Menchie’s to Open Three Newfoundland Locations
Yogurtworld Franchising Corp., master franchisor of Menchie’s in Canada, has signed an area development agreement with Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist in Curling Brad Gushue to open three Menchie’s locations in St. John’s, Newfoundland. With locations already open in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, Menchie’s is set to become a national chain with the opening of its Newfoundland locations.
“We are delighted that we will soon have stores open in St. John’s and have no doubt that the St. John’s market will be sensational. There is nothing in St. John’s in any way similar to the Menchie’s experience,” says Michael Shneer, president of Yogurtworld Franchising Corp. “We are equally proud of the fact that we are now a truly national chain in Canada and that no other self serve frozen yogurt chain is even remotely close to that accomplishment.”
The first store is expected to open in April 2012. Says Gushue: “Having won an Olympic Gold Medal, it’s always been important for me to be associated with the best in whatever endeavour I’m involved with. I know that the community is going to love the family friendly environment and we can’t wait to get the first store open.”

SUBWAY Expects to Create 25,000 Jobs in 2012
In 2011, SUBWAY® opened more than 2,400 restaurants worldwide, including 1,100 in the U.S. and Canada, creating approximately 24,000 full- and part-time foodservice jobs. With plans to open 2,500 additional outlets this year, the company expects to create another 25,000 positions by the end of 2012.
“It’s more about the opportunities than the numbers,” says Chief Development Officer Don Fertman. “With each new Subway restaurant that opens, there is an entrepreneur that wants to own and operate his own small business and provide great food, exceptional customer service and job opportunities in his or her community.”
Fertman cites the brand’s innovative products and non-traditional locations for its continued growth. “From reducing sodium content across the menu and fortifying the bread with calcium and vitamin D, to opening locations in airports, college campuses, high schools, health clubs and hospitals, and one made entirely out of recycled materials, it’s clear that we work on staying ahead of the curve as we continue to grow,” he says.
