The Process

In December, franchisors receive an invitation to participate in a confidential electronic survey that starts the process for their system. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and asks franchisors to rate themselves in areas such as training, support, communications, operations and marketing.

Upon receiving the completed survey, the same survey is sent to all franchisees in the system (franchisor must provide an electronic contact list of all franchisees in the system). Franchisees are asked to complete the survey.

The results of the aggregated franchisee responses are compared to the franchisor's survey and points are assigned based on alignment of the responses (ie. if the franchisor rates themselves a "4" and the franchisees rate it a "2", the alignment is off and fewer points are awarded than if the franchisor rating had been "3.8"). The system with the most points wins the CFA Award of Excellence in Franchising.

To encourage franchisee participation, franchisors are provided with email templates to encourage them to take 15 minutes to complete the online survey.
